Firewire Mashup: is it a good Groveler? Mini review #firewiresurfboards #groveler #mashup #fish
Firewire Mashup Groveling Mini review.
The Firewire mashup is described as a high-performance fish surfboard and Groveler.
The waves in this video are tiny and gutless, but the Firewire Mashup, a collaboration between Rob Machado and Dan Mann in the Helium construction, does a great job! Thanks to the 32.8 litre that's well hidden within the Mashup.
This model is the 5'6 x 19 7/8" 2 11/16" x 32.8L. I prefer the quad fin set-up and find that the surfboard performs much better in all conditions compared to a tree fin set-up.

The Best Groveler surfboard EVER? An amazing Daily Driver, The Firewire EVO Review. This is the best groveler surfboard and daily driver surfboard I have ever owned. It's so fast that you have to wipe speed off. It's so easy: a few pumps, and you're flying. But you can still do turns! You can still find these boards new and second-hand. The FireWire Mashup surfboard is a Quad Fin setup. The FireWire Mashup is fast and responsive and is described as a high-performance fish surfboard. The way you look on your Tomo Evo. Brahhhhh NO000 COMPARISON!!! You on your EVO the way you rip that thing! And the SPEEEEEEDDD!!!!!!! I'd be pulling up to the beach, & asking the boys, how's this guy! Killing it! On a crappy gutless day. You'd be getting me all stoked to paddle out!!! I'd be like, brahhhhh> You on the Mashup and Machadocado is the ahhhhhhh factor for me. Not kookin it!!! Not killing it!!! But Not Bad!!!!! Still Ripping!!! But when I watch your clips of you on your Evo Bro... You breaking me away from the Rob Machado Fan Boy Club & how we all hope to surf like him, with GRACE! Especially US goofy footers! Only to find ourselves not surfing like him and leaves us BLAMING "OURSELVES" AND SOMETIMES, "NOT" THE BOARD. I'm tired of giving my thousands and thousands of dollars to Rob Machado & his family clan already. That's why I put my 5’2” Machadocado up for sale after watching your Video Clip COMPARISON. I Love Your NOT A SALES MEN. But just a normal local ripper. Letting your surfing steer us in the right direction with you surfing average waves that we typically surf most days out of the year. Side Note: I traded my seaside my 5'5 for a 5'4" Tomo Revo I know it's not a grovler and I took it out on a crappy small ankle high day. Which I had no business taking it out. I should've busted out a longboard instead so I didn't get a really good feel for it but I did catch over 30 waves within the two hours l've been out. I did get lucky with two sneaky sets, rolling in at least chest high. And Bam the snaps and re-entries a Whatever I thought in my brain the board responded the way I wanted it to.. Crazy snaps crazy re-entries, and I even sneaked in a figure & on the worst crappiest wave day in planet history. I can only imagine when I take that Revo on a solid 6 to 8 feet Hawaiian day

      And you're 100% correct I think l'm going for the the brand new 5'4" in helium construction I know it's supposed to be better then the LFT but l'm hoping it doesn't work the opposite and very spot on the 5'3 looks like there's no dings watertight in LFT, but that white turned into brown as brown, could be. The 5'5" in helium is pretty hard to make out because of the pictures and it's taken in the shade and not in the sunlight and if I've been doing my homework right, it looks like an older TOMO graphic design, then TOMO latest graphic designs because I definitely been studying these boards within the past week like a hawk

    • @JM-pf5qc
      @JM-pf5qc День назад

      I went on to dark arts website and I technically don't know what l'm doing. They give you the option of choosing your construction, which is carbon partially carbon and so far the size and dimensions is no problem. It's the construction part where they lose me. The fin box is no problem I would op for futures. And they also give you a color option which I probably would go with the standard black carbon, but then I also be worrying about the wax melting superfast all the time because I had black boards in the past even in the board bag it melts. By the time I got done with checkout from cart it looked to be pricey, roughly $1,500 because of the shipping to Hawaii so I got out of that screen as quick as I could hate pissing off my wife, which I already do most times Surfing does that at times so I might go with the 5'4" brand new in helium even at 29 L is way more than my volume range but l'm sure like you said I will definitely make it work specially for a grovler sometimes foam can be your friend

      | 100% know this video wasn't intended to compare EVO vs mashup. It was me just being a brother this past weeks, watching your Clips time and time and countless time again to where I just had to give my honest productive criticism as a brother would look out for a brother, the same way you looking out for us in the Surfing community Young and Old. I totally agree with you about punishing ourselves when it's totally not us, sometimes it is, but it's only because we have high expectations and no our Surfing capabilities because we've been there before and how do one go backwards that just doesn't make sense and that's where frustration comes in because of the video clips we watch and when we try to put it into reality, it just doesn't lineup. where I can honestly say I'm guilty. My wife tells me time and time again. I'm extra hard on myself but you know when it works. It works when it doesn't. Somethings wrong and we have to try and solve the problem.

But after I found my right equipment, I could stop doing my homework and researching the rest was up to me with putting in the work. Throwing Airs! snapping the lip on foil, Re Entry, Back Snaps! & basically taking it to the limits. Threw my surfing game off! & maybe that's why I didn't care so much of the Evo / Surfing World, because I was on a New Stoke! But 7 years later, I'm finally getting back into ShortBoarding / Longboarding. Now I can go back and forth with Hydro Foiling and Surfing. @surfingtipsandtricks 4 дня назад

      @robcampbell8383 Thank you🙏 That is a 5’6” 32.2L. It was the only one in the shop so I didnt have much choice. I'm 5’11” 78kg. It depends on how paddle-fit you are. I paddled it yesterday and wouldn't want it to be any thinner😂 but I am a little out of shape and only surf a couple of times a week @ the moment. When I was younger, I could ride little slippers with no problem. But from my experience with the Evo, you can ride it longer, and it will still be loose. If you are super fit and paddling a thin board isn't a problem, go smaller. The Helium construction seems more buoyant, so that's something to consider. Mine is an LFT. It's tricky to prioritise volume and length, eh? I ordered a Revo a few days ago and decided to go for the 5’7” 31.4L. After paddling the Evo yesterday, I am worried that I should have gotten the 5’8” 33L. So I'm hoping I can paddle it when it arrives 😂🤞🤙

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks 6 дней назад

      I am 78kg, and I have the 5’8”. It paddles pretty well. What do you usually ride, litres? I think you could go up if you wanted to; it has nice rails, and the step tail makes the rail line nice and low through the tail. The 5’9” is 34.1L They have done an excellent job of hiding the foam in the board. You have to consider how much you surf and how paddle-fit you are. I'm not always paddle fit because I can't surf every day, so I have to have my boards a bit thicker than I would choose if I were super fit🤙

    nice flash review, I really like that you tried it as a pure Twin. I tried the one I have with larger fins but mistakenly used a trailer too, and it was dragging. visibly dragging. Thanks for the inspiration, I will try it this weekend. :) Cheers

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks 7 дней назад

      Thanks 🙏, yeah, give it a go. Some find that it lights the board up for them. I was listening to a Tomo interview, and he talked about how a deep concave through the tail sits the board down in the water and acts like a back fin. He was talking about the Revo ( it has a different bottom shape, V and concaves), but the Cado has a deep double Concave running through it; it's the same principle, and if you stick a big trailer in the back, it may make the board stiff. I know how double concaves work, and they squirt speed. I shaped 200 boards and also glassed and sanded them back in the '90s and early 2000s, with no shaping machine and a lot of dust😂 ( I made a lot of fish/small wave boards for myself) but I honestly can't get any speed on this board, and I'm not sure why😂😅 I wonder if that is making the board slow. (maybe it would have been better as quad) I looked at my footage, and the board 5’6 is too big for me. A 5’2 would be the size, but it doesnt have enough volume. If you have the Machado 2+1, maybe try a small Trailer fin. That was my next option. The Machdo 2+1 without a back fin is the best fun I have had on it. I bought the Machado Keels. It just feels slow for me! Good luck at the weekend😀🤙

      Thanks, Thomye🙏 my Spitfire is 5’8 ", and I also have a 5’8" Mashup. I haven’t ridden the Mashup for a while. But in the last few surfs, I used a quad set-up, and I like the board a lot more, especially the backside. I found on the backside with 3 and 2+1 I couldn’t get any drive down the line or do backside cutbacks very well. I think I’m going to ride it the next few surfs.🤙

I came from a 9'1 longboard, tried a 6'4 fish I couldn't duck dive, then this board... it's fab. At 53 I thought I best try to learn to short board ASAP and am not disappointed at all with my choice. Nice surfing! I had one, not for long , I didn't like it. I much prefer my Cymatic. The Evo is too lateral, and I did only surf it as a quad. I surf with quads 90% of the time. I first started riding quads in the 80's and love them for the most part. One thing I particularly didn't like about the Evo was it felt like it pushed water when you first stood up, until after that first pump. Once you got it going though, very fast. Not a bad board at all, just there are better boards for me.

I looked at a few clips of me surfing the mashup the other day when I was considering buying a Revo. And they didnt look too bad, but when I surf it, it's unpredictable, and sometimes it just stops. Evo was ground breaking! I still have one that I surf occasionally and a 23 litre Evo that I use for Kitesurfing. The Evo is not a groveler. I find it best in shoulder to well overhead range. On the little Evo I regularly kite really big surf in really high wind. The design will deal with way more speed and power than what you get from surfing. Tomo's Modern Planning Hulls are the forerunners to so many boards on the market now that run a parallel rail line.

But that’s just Rob, right… But for some reason when I came across your last review on the Machadocado and you were mentioning you have been riding it as a twin. I just had to give it a go. First time I tried it, I didn’t like it. I had to baby my bottom turns, other wise I’d be sliding out on my bottom and top turns. To slippery. I been using my Machadocado with Robs Two plus one trailer set up and Love it. Love the board. So all I did is yank the trailer and tried it that way as a twin. Was a miss. Did not work out for me. But, the other day I tried throwing in my old school K2 Keel set in and Walllahhhhh Magic. Board came to life in the crappiest of crappiest high tide inconsistent surf. My buddies were scratching their head wondering how I was skating across an ankle biter with tremendous speed snaps and cut backs. Lol Cheat Code. Thanks Brother. Aloha From Hawaii. Ps: Did you ever try the FireWire Too Fish? Wondering if that should ever be my next investment. Some thing just to cruise and not try to Rip / shred and try so hard on. Worked out really well helping me in the transition from a 8'0 foamie and I just love this board as it allowed me to stay in the water no matter what. Now I started to feeling it a bit oversized and whenever I want to attack the face a bit more vertical I end up catching the nose because the nose is pretty wide (I think it is something like 22 inches wide). My next daily driver will be a SubXero by JS, in Carbotune: I got a 5'5, slightly under the 20 inches wide. It comes with 29 litres, which should be my correct "grovel" range. Considering how junky those waves look, it looks like a fun board. You can only do so much in fat weak waves performance wise. Machado's boards seem to let you get the most out of those kinds of conditions and then the boards go unreal when you get some decent waves. I might have to get one.

  • @trestlesrocks

    Just saw an interview with Rob and it sounds like he actually developed the board as a twin using his Keels and only last minute added the 2+1. I’m assuming as a marketing opportunity for those fins. Anyway, I went ahead and grabbed a set of his keels to test out. Haven’t tried them yet, but visually the area of those fins and the way they’re placed on the board when installed looks like an ideal complement to the tail shape and width. Will update if I get them out there soon.

I saw a new video with Kevin Schulz comparing the Too Fish with the Cado, and he was catching rails on the Cado ( 2+1 set-up). Granted, the waves were really hard to ride with a lot of backwash. I went up in volume with the 5’8” compared to my regular shortboard think “It’s a groveler, a little volume won’t hurt”. But I can’t help myself from wanting maximum responsiveness. Thanks for sharing your experience Mike, it's great to get footage from non professional surfers. It's hard to compare with the Evo, the waves look quite different to me (aside from height). As you said though that board is meant to be good in those waves... Keep us updated, cheers.

      Yes, you could be right. I surfed the Evo and a board made by Ferox ( the flexter), which has a similar outline but a more drawn-in tail. Those boards would go fast in tiny waves. But let's see, I hope you are right 🤞🤞

    Consider giving it a try with the Machado 2+1’s with out the trailer. Board itself has a lot of drive baked in. Feels like it’s easy to over fin it

      Yes, I will give it a go for sure! 🙏I have the F1 Future 2+1 with a smaller trailer, which I need to try.🤙

    i feel machado's board is difficult to ride. i prefer dan mann shapes for the groveler.

      Yes, I don't usually have a problem jumping from board to board. But the MashUp and the Machadocado are a challenge for me anyway 😂

    Nice video 👍 and I agree, the evo looks faster and easier in smaller waves.

    What size was that Evo? Quad? I've really enjoyed the Machadocado, but that comparison really makes the Evo look magic

      @surfingtipsandtricks so Evo your favourite over the Cado?

    • @surfingtipsandtricks
      @surfingtipsandtricks 22 дня назад

      @tezf6883 I was just making a comparison. I still have that Evo, but I have surfed it to death, and I don't really want to surf it anymore. I'm definitely going to keep riding The Cado. But I was surprised by how slow I looked on it. Maybe it's the conditions that I have surfed it in so far 9 second wave period summer surf, not much wall. In the clips I am fighting to keep it going on some sections. When you watch Rob, he is going so fast without much effort. Maybe I am surfing it wrong 😂 I have had 5 surfs on it so far 🤙

    Great review, like the twin fin setup. I have a lost puddle jumper sting, curious about trying it as a twin now very similar outline. Roughly what is the distance from the side fin box to the rear of the board? Great review breakdown!

      Thanks🙏 It's night here. I will measure it tomorrow. I remember hearing somewhere that the Cado front fins were placed so that it would surf as Twin, but I can't remember where I heard it. 🤙
